The Art is the Thing
Hank Haskell has turned his literary talents toward a new book with
a subject very familiar to Pat and Hank, the founders of South
Carolina Repertory Company. The Art is the Thing is the inside story of
SCRC from its inception in 1992 through a celebration of its first
twelve years and 54 productions. It will go on sale during SCRC’s fall
season, and proceeds will go directly toward helping SCRC maintain
its high standards of quality theatre.
$20.00 (no tax). Checks should be made out to SCRC for The Art is the Thing
W. Steward Woodfill: Master of Mackinac's Grand Hotel
Grand
Hotel was built in 1887 and is still owned today by the Woodfill-Musser family.
It is located on Mackinac Island, Michigan
and looks out across the Straits of Mackinac. It is the World's Largest Summer
Hotel and is the setting for Haskell's book.
W. Stewart Woodfill, featured in Haskell's Biographical-Memoir,
started working at Grand Hotel as a night-clerk and within eleven years he owned
the hotel. He owned and operated this "world's largest summer hotel" until he
sold it to his nephew, Dan Musser, who still owns it. The hotel opens each year
in May and closes with their annual "Somewhere in Time" weekend in early November.
The movie of this same name features the Grand Hotel and Mackinac Island and
stars Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour and Christopher Plumber.
Haskell worked at the Grand Hotel before going to college and
knew Mr. Woodfill quite well himself. Woodfill was the long time owner and operator
of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan. The story is told as far as
possible in WSW's own words which Haskell received permission from Mr. Woodfill's
attorney, Tom Winquist, to quote from.
Winquist
said,
[Mr. Woodfill's] doings were carefully conceived and implemented plans
theatrically carried out by a master actor (he always likened himself to John
Barrymore) designed to create a certain image of himself and his activities.
. . . All of his discussions, conversations and even relationships were undertaken
for a purpose.
Haskell's book, W. Stewart Woodfill: Master of Mackinac's Grand Hotel,
is currently being sold locally on Mackinac Island and arrangements are being
made to make it available in book stores on Hilton Head Island. Copies of W.
Stewart Woodfill: Master of Mackinac's Grand Hotel are available online
or by mail for $20 plus $3 postage and handling.
